3D Mammography (TOMO)
3D Mammography Now Available!
North Cypress Medical Center is now providing 3D mammography at both our main hospital campus and our Towne Lake Imaging location. 3D mammography is the newest screening and diagnostic breast imaging tool and is used to improve the early detection of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the MOST diagnosed cancer in women, affecting 1 in 8 in the U.S. 3D mammography helps to detect cancer earlier. Women whose breast cancer is detected at an early stage have a 93% or more survival rate in the first five year. The information below will help you better understand 3D mammography and answer any questions you may have.
What is 3D mammography?
Digital breast tomosynthesis (Tomo) is better known as 3D mammography. During the 3D part of the exam, an x-ray arm sweeps over the breast, taking multiple images in seconds. These images are displayed as a series of thin slices that can be viewed by the radiologist as a separate image or an interactive animation. 3D mammography is used in combination with 2D mammography. With 3D mammography, women will still need to have it done annually. Early detection greatly increases treatment options and the likelihood of a successful recovery.
What are the benefits of 3D mammography?
Traditional 2D mammography takes two-dimensional pictures of the breast and is still one of the most advanced tools for detecting breast abnormalities. 3D mammography allows the radiologists to examine the tissue one thin layer at a time. Fine details are more visible and are less likely to be hidden by overlapping tissue.
Is 3D mammography safe for me?
It is safe. Radiation exposure to the breast is quite low. The radiation dose for a combined 2D/3D mammogram is well below the acceptable limits defined by the FDA and is only a fraction of the level of radiation everyone receives annually from just being outdoors. 3D mammography is safe for women with breast implants.
