Education is a key component to a Pulmonary Rehab Program for both the patient and their family. It can include one-on-one teaching, written materials, and group classes. Teaching sessions are extremely important, helping provide patients with information about medications, treatments, and self-management skills at home. Dietary consultations, if needed, are available with a physician order.
Exercise involves lower and upper body training, as well as building up respiratory muscles. Respiration muscle training can improve respiratory muscle function, help reduce shortness of breath and also improve the ability to perform one’s daily activities. Lower body exercises such as walking or riding a stationary bike help to strengthen leg muscles and flexibility, making tasks such as standing up from low surfaces or walking up stairs easier. Upper body training increases arm and shoulder muscles to provide support to the ribcage and can result in better breathing. Improved upper body conditioning and better breathing can help patients perform daily activities such as taking a bath, cleaning the house, or shopping. Exercise training is conducted by our Pulmonary Rehabilitation staff.
